Welcome page and custom instructions
The clock should not start while people are still reading the rules. A welcome page briefs respondents first, and the timer only begins when they click start.

Welcome to the Biology Midterm
- • You have 30 minutes once you press start
- • Notes and books are not allowed
- • Answers submit automatically at 0:00
1. Which organelle produces ATP?
Brief before the clock, not during
List the time limit, allowed materials, honor-code rules, and what happens at 0:00 on a dedicated screen before the first question. Respondents begin informed and unhurried, and you stop burning exam minutes on instructions.
An explicit, deliberate start
The timer starts when the respondent clicks the start button, not when the page loads. Someone who opens the link during lunch to see what it is does not accidentally spend their whole time window.
Make it look like yours
Set the welcome page colors and messaging to match your school, company, or program. A branded first screen signals that this assessment is official and worth taking seriously.
Fewer questions once the timer runs
Most mid-exam questions are really instruction questions: How long do I have? Can I use notes? What if I refresh? Answering all of them up front, in writing, keeps the actual assessment quiet.
